How does someone get from point A (where they are) to point B (where they want to be)?
You clicked to get here unknowingly to see that ruler, and read these words… but for a purpose. You want to grow. As a person. As an individual. That’s great! Let’s get started. Shall we?
I’ll start with a mental model. Look at that ruler. See it’s markings, those are hash marks. Without each one you cannot have a ruler. It takes each inch, each centimeter to make up 12 inches or 30cm. Life is like this too – it takes little steps to make up the whole.
A real example for ya…
A business. It is made up of five parts (hash marks): Value Creation, Marketing, Sales, Value Delivery, and Financials. You grow and build a stable business with mastery of each part (or hiring a master.. more on that another time).
You might be saying “oh okay. but where do I even start?”
It all depends- like most things
Step 1) Determine where you want to be in whatever area of life. Be mindful of outside influence. Don’t let others dictate your happiness/joy.
Step 2) Write down a list of things you’re good at – it can be anything. Skipping. Fishing. C+.
A N Y T H I N G
Do the same for things you’re bad at (Important to remember – none of these things define you as a person unless you let it – good or bad.)
Step 3) Now I want you to think about the ruler mental model- each hash mark. We are going to build your ruler. Work backwards- Ask yourself “What are people doing to get from that hash mark to the next?”
Example: What are people doing to get their credit score from 750 to 800. And then from 700 to 750, and so on.
Pro tip: If you don’t know Google it – Use parentheses to get exact match of your search. “How do I lose 10 pounds?”
Once you do the three steps you can start working through the “hash marks”. You now have milestones. Challenge yourself with comfortable deadlines and track important data, KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). Tracking allows you not only to know where you are but also recall where you were.
Understanding where you are going, why you want to be there, what you need, how to get it, and determined consistency — you’ll overcome everything and get where you want to be. Be resourceful. Be resilient.
